500-hour Yoga Alliance registered Teacher Training course
at a traditional ashram in Rishikesh (India)
Nov. 5 - Dec. 11, 2009 (arrival in Delhi Nov. 4)
|
This 300-hour certification course is intended for graduates of a Yoga Alliance recognized 200-hour teacher training program or equivalent. The course offers yoga teachers of all traditions a unique opportunity for professional development and profound personal growth in the land of yoga’s origin, and in Rishikesh, the city of yoga!
The YTT 500 group will explore the transformative power of diverse aspects of the yoga tradition both theoretically and experientially, and share reflections and personal experiences in a supportive community or yogis and teachers. The course offers the following elements: Techniques, Teaching Methodology, Philosophy-Lifestyle-Ethics, Anatomy (physical and subtle), and a Teaching Practicum.
Every morning trainees will practice the transformative arts of satkarma (purification), mantra and meditation, exploring various different techniques and observing their effects. Following the meditation, we will practice asana and pranayama in various class-styles in the Akhanda approach.
The Techniques segments of the YTT are designed to help trainees learn to work with students in advanced asana and pranayama, as well as to better teach diverse student bodies using props and focused assists.
In Teaching Methodology, trainees will explore the art of sequencing, language use, creating a transformational space, as well as creating Intermediate/Advanced, Gentle/Restorative and Prenatal classes according to the Akhanda approach. One of the highlights of the YTT 500 is learning to teach two unique and profound class-styles designed by Yogi Vishvketu: Hatha-Raja and Classical Kundalini.
• Hatha-Raja (a unique meditative flow practiced with the sonorous Brahmaree pranayama);
• Classical Kundalini (an uplifting sequence that integrates postures, oscillating movements, Tantric Bija mantras, pranayama and chakra meditation);
• Intermediate/Advanced Akhanda Yoga (a flowing sequence of asanas with long holding designed to encourage working through resistance, releasing outmoded patterns, and moving towards a profound sense of balance);
• Gentle/Restorative Yoga (gentle and supported yoga practices for those suffering from deep stress or physical/emotional injury); and
• Prenatal Yoga (asana, pranayama, meditations and their modifications specifically tailored to the pregnant woman’s needs and experience).
During the Teaching Practicum, each participant will teach three 1.5-hour classes in two or three of the above styles, and will receive feedback from the trainers and their peers.

This course also includes:
Anatomy: In-depth teachings by Dr. Nivedita Pingle on yoga therapy and the anatomy of yoga;
Subtle Anatomy: Contemplations on the chakras including explorations of and their mystical symbolism, including journaling and drawing. Discussions on the nadi system and Kundalini energy;
Philosophy-Lifestyle-Ethics: Teachings and discussions of yoga philosophy through history with reference to the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and mystics of the common era. We will explore how the yoga teachings can influence how we perceive and experience our daily lives. This will include Ayurvedic principles, and an understanding of how to determine which yoga practices will be balancing to our constitution. We will also explore the ethics of the yoga teaching profession.
One of the many benefits of studying in the ashram is to be a part of traditional ashram programs, such as the twice weekly evening program we call Transformational Experiences. This program will include kiirtan (devotional singing), mantra (Vedic and Upanishadic chanting), group sharing and other rituals.
